I’d argue that there’s no better place to splurge on fresh seafood for dinner (or lunch) when you’re on Maui celebrating a special event. They were determined to showcase the fish and the foods of Polynesia to their customers. They re-introduced breadfruit and other long-neglected Polynesian foods to their menu and they encouraged local farmers to grow the best organic produce. New hotels were opening and young people were moving to Maui to work in them.
Restaurant Beginnings
We have traveled in over 90 countries and finding a place to eat is always an adventure. We were introduced to Mamas in 1982 and its become our favorite, not just because of the food and the location, but because of the staff who have become our special friends. The stunning views of Kū‘au Bay on the North Shore invite you into our restaurant. Some call it a beach front restaurant, we call it an oasis. ‘Ulu, mango, liliko‘i, Ahi, Onaga, avocado, seasons change and so does our menu.

He had started at Mama’s at age 19 and his cooking skills impressed Doris. Floyd and Doris decided to move beyond being just a good neighborhood restaurant. Once through the doldrums and then the fickle light winds of the Horse Latitudes, they reached the steady winds of the Southern trades. It was good sailing and Marinero moved at a steady 5 to 6 knots. Little Keith was fascinated by the schools of porpoises that would play in the boat’s wake, surfing the waves and leaping out of the water. Occasionally a whale as big as Marinero would swim so close it could almost be touched.
Fresh, Local, Maui
You may have better luck making a reservation for lunch instead of dinner. I’ve been to Mama’s for lunch, and I found that the food and service were both fantastic. In fact, my favorite Mama’s dish (an ono fish entree caught by one of Mama’s staff members that same morning) was from the lunch menu.
Fresh Fish at Mama’s Fish House
After a few weeks a young Marquesan came aboard as crew. For three months they explored the islands of the Marquesas, sometimes sailing to villages that had never been visited by a sailboat. In the more remote villages, they would be met by canoes paddled by kids bearing gifts of fruit and fish. Dozens of them would clamber aboard and sleep overnight on Marinero’s deck.

As you pass Baldwin Beach, admire the view of the rain-carved West Maui Mountains. The morning light often reveals the hidden interior of ‘Īao Valley, your next destination. When it comes to entrée choices at Mama’s Fish House, it’s hard to go wrong with any of the premium seafood options. However, what I’d heard time and time again, is that Mama’s Stuffed Fish, the restaurant’s signature plate, is a must. Adding a twist to this classic dish, my waitress informs me that the kitchen is using kanpachi, a premium member of the amberjack family, instead of the traditional mahimahi.
Any doubts I have about this switch are immediately rectified as the meal lands on my table. Elegantly presented, I almost feel guilty digging into this seafood medley, but the thick, perfectly buttered lobster tail sitting atop my kanpachi is just too inviting. The actual stuffed kanpachi, which is enveloped in a macadamia nut crust, delights with every bite, filling my mouth with chunks of lobster and crab. Take the scenic drive back to sea level through historic Makawao and Paia towns. Bordered by a rodeo arena and a polo field, Makawao is the charming headquarters of the paniolo, Hawaiian cowboys who continue to rope and ride across the island’s lush ranchlands. On the corner of Makawao and Baldwin Avenues you’ll see T.
Mama’s Fish House: A Must Do or Definite Don’t? What It’s Like to Dine at the Revered Maui Restaurant
At Balai Pata, a new Filipino restaurant in Kahului, a celebration of the flavors that the chef and owner Joey Macadangdang grew up with is a welcome addition to Maui’s restaurant scene. Plump Kauai prawns sauteed in garlicky fish sauce ($17) set the stage for savory sinigang ($30) — tamarind broth loaded with long beans, okra and fish. For dessert, two can share the halo-halo ($18) — crushed ice topped with avocado, ube ice cream, coconut cream and fruit jellies, served in a coconut shell. The décor reflects a bright, homespun aesthetic, and once a month, local families fill the restaurant for late-night happy hour and karaoke battles — check Instagram for dates.
GPS devices will direct you to our service entrance, so look for our fishing boat (above picture) at the entrance to our parking lot. The valet driver will ask if you have a reservation before directing you to the check-in area. Head to the podium next to the parking area entrance to check in and confirm your reservation.

First, book a sunrise reservation at Haleakalā National Park well in advance ($1 permit, $30 park entrance). In the darkness, drive slowly up the 10,000-foot volcano; fog often obscures cattle and native geese loitering in hairpin turns.
Entrees hover around the $60 to $80 range, while appetizers tend to stay around $20 to $30. I don’t drink alcohol, so I don’t have an idea of what alcoholic drinks usually cost. That said, my recent tablemates ordered a glass of champagne that cost around $27. They stayed in French Polynesia for the next six months. Letters from friends in Lahaina told of plans to develop Maui as a major tourist destination.
